Ronaldo returning back to Manchester United:A good business or a bad one?

Since Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United on August 27, 2021, things haven’t fared as many have suspected or hoped. In fact, Manchester United is very likely to finish outside the Champions league position, as well as overall European competition. The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo has shadowed the arrival of other high quality players like Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane. After several seasons of tumultuous situations within the club, it seemed as if the club has started the rebuilding process. However, the beautiful dream of club rebuilding has remained likely only until the Ronaldo’s arrival was announced.

It was clear that Ronaldo’s arrival wouldn’t support long term rebuilding process of the team as team needs to adjust their play as the way that fits Ronaldo’s game. Within first few games it was clear that the younger players in the team were starstruck by Ronaldo’s arrival in the dressing room. The younger players changed their style of play to fit Ronaldo rather than playing their own game, there can be no more expensive pushback in the team rebuilding process than this. So, in the long term this transfer has came out to be very unfavorable. But what about the short term? What about the overall fanbase? What does it says about the club’s business ?

It is very apparent that Manchester United won’t win any titles this year. But Ronaldo’s homecoming has been a story beautiful enough to strike markets outside football. We human being react more to stories than numbers/stats. As history has shown, human being learned to tell story long before they learned to count. So, even though Manchester United fails to win any titles this season, the story of homecoming of one of the best player ever in the history of this sport, will deepens the fan’s loyalty to the club, and broadens the history of the club. Moreover, it helps club economically by selling more club products and membership.

So, it is very difficult to say whether Ronaldo’s homecoming has been a good transfer to the team overall, but I stand on my position: Yes it has been/it will remain as a good transfer in the history.
